Mather Golf Course

The Carmichael Golf Club (CGC) played its’ second 2022 event at Mather on October 8, 2022. While the calendar has turned to October, Summer was hanging on for dear life – as a clear sky and pleasant morning gave way to quickly warming temperatures (eventually reaching the mid 90’s) that took a toll on many of our players on the back nine.

When Mather first opened up for public play in the 1990’s, it was a welcome addition to a Sacramento area that was starved for golf courses. The course fit in with many of the area layouts at that time – White Tees playing in the 6,400 yard range, with the Red Tees nearing 5,800 yards. As the area’s golfing population has aged, Mather has modified (shortened) the layout on both of the ‘regular player’ tee sets – taking the ‘teeth’ out of some of the longer Par 4’s. With only 1 water feature (Par 3 11th), the shorter course now gives players many more scoring opportunities. Mather plays tough right out of the gate (on this day, the Par 4 1st the hardest Par 4, the Par 5 2nd the hardest Par 5), with a couple of long, tough Par 4’s to end the day. Five (5) of the 25 players shot scores less than net par 72 (with 2 others shooting net par 72). Nine (9) players shot scores of net 80 or higher.

We had our youngest playing guest to date in a CGC event – Paul Lee brought his 10 year old son, Troy Vang, to join the group. Troy, who plays in NCGA Junior events, showed a form most of us would envy – shooting a 92 (gross score) from the Pilot Tees (4,926 yards).

The Flight winners on this day were as follows:
1st: Mike A. Johnson, net 70 (by 1 stroke over Errol Thomas)
2nd: Jack Dever, net 67 (by 3 strokes over Diane Hoffman)
3rd: Sherry Aceituno, net 71 (by 1 stroke over Joe Jenkins)
