Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course

We played our next-to-last 2022 event at Bartley Cavanaugh on October 22, 2022. This day started out looking (and feeling) like rain – but a little breeze quickly cleared out the clouds and left us with a beautiful Fall day, with temperatures in the 70’s for most of the golfing portion of the day. The breeze, while never violent, was fairly constant – and at a course like Cavanaugh, where the water hazards pop up every few holes, it definitely added to the golfing test.

Cavanaugh was the City of Sacramento’s addition to the golfing boon of the 1990s. On a piece of land limited in acreage and fairly flat, the course that unfolded was like the quirky little brother! Many of the courses built in that era (Castle Oaks, Cherry Island, Woodcreek, etc.) used water features much more than Sacramento golfers had seen up to that point – Cavanaugh’s water just feels more up close and personal, being in a more restricted space. The use of grass mounds to help visually separate close, parallel holes does more for your legs than for your protection from stray golf balls.

With all of that, Cavanaugh has turned into an interesting golfing mixture – short enough that there is ample reward for good shots, challenging enough (especially, as on this day, when the rough was thick) to make you pay for the not so good shots. On this day, the course more than held its’ own – it played the 6th toughest of 16 CGC events so far in 2022. Only two (2) of the 23 players on this day shot net scores better than par 71, with another three (3) players shooting net even par. Five (5) players shot scores of net 80 or higher.

The Flight winners on this day were as follows:
1st: Raul Cisneros, net 71 (by 2 strokes over Erick Ammons)
2nd: Diane Hoffman, net 69 (by 1 stroke over Rick Givans)
3rd: Barbara Edgar, net 71 (won tie-breaker over Debbie Rankin)
