Wildhorse Golf Club

The CGC capped a whirlwind (and that won’t be the last reference to ‘wind’ in this recap) opening to our 2022 season (3 events in 21 days) with our event at Wildhorse in Davis on April 9, 2022.

We find that the CGC generally gets better turnouts early and late in each season (early due to wanting to get back out on the golf course after Winter, and before the heat of Summer – late due to getting those final rounds in before the Winter, with the Fall weather being so nice after the Summer heat). With that, we try to schedule events every other week in the early Spring and the Fall. However, due to aeration schedules and other factors, April 16 (our originally planned date) was just not working out. Not wanting to wait a month between events (April 2 to April 30), we were able to book times at Wildhorse for April 9, days before their scheduled aeration.

Wildhorse can be a fun track – it has many short par 4’s that can reward good golf shots. It also has many hazards that need to be navigated. Being an open, links-style course – you are a bit at the mercy of the weather you get on the day of play. It drains well (so it is a good wet season course), and exposed as it is, the Summer heat can be rough. But the Spring and Fall, the best times to play, are also the Windy seasons. And did we get the wind on this day – a constant 20-25 MPH (with stronger gusts). Drivers into Par 3’s and incorporating the wind into the reading of your putts was the nature of the day!! None of the 23 players shot scores less than net par 72 (1 player did shoot net par 72). Thirteen (13) players shot scores of net 80 or higher. The shot of the day belonged to Gary Borge, who eagled the Par 4 2nd Hole.

The Flight winners on this day were as follows:
1st: Mike A. Johnson, net 77 (by 2 strokes over Bruce Hoffman and Ken Worman)
2nd: Rick Givans, net 72 (by 2 strokes over Jack Dever)
3rd: Debbie Rankin, net 78 (by 1 stroke over Mike Agrippino)
